An iterative method is analysed for solving symmetric elliptic problems with possibly discontinuous coefficients. Based on finite element discretization a symmetric positive definite linear system is obtained which is solved by the preconditioned conjugate gradient method. Two particular preconditioners are examined. Convergence is proved for the Poisson equation with either Dirichlet or periodic boundary conditions, and an improved estimate is given for the condition number.
