A state-space extension of A-A-K Hankel approximation theory is presented. It is shown that A-A-K theory can also be generalized to minimal-norm (optimal) approximation problems. A state-space formula for generating \(m\) independent Hankel singular-vector pairs corresponding to a prescribed Hankel singular value \(\delta\) is derived in terms of the balanced realization of an \(m\times m\) rational function matrix \(G\) which is used to characterize all the optimal Hankel approximants.
