Recently \textit{S. Liu} [Fundam. Math. 143, 183-190 (1993; Zbl 0801.16009)] has given a generalization of the well-known Four Terms in the Middle Theorem of Bautista and Brenner. The author shows that Liu's proof can be translated into a purely combinatorial one, and obtains a combinatorial theorem which implies Liu's theorem.
