\textit{J. Abaffy}, \textit{C. Broyden} and \textit{E. Spedicato} [Numer. Math. 45, 361-376 (1984; Zbl 0535.65009)] generalized a method of H. Y. Huang which is based on orthogonal projections. Later Abaffy and Spedicato refer to this method as the ``ABS method''. There is a relation to Brent's method. In the present paper the ABS method is applied to underdetermined systems of nonlinear equations. A theorem of Kantorovich type is established.
