This paper is concerned with the accurate computation of a matrix which defines the (known) rotation of a rigid body. This is sometimes called the orthogonal Procrustes problem. The concept of ``condition number'' is made precise for this problem followed by an application of this concept to the examination of stable algorithms for computing the orthogonal rotation matrix. Computational results are provided.
