The author studies a variant of the ILU method. He shows that the ILU- decomposition of an \(M\)-matrix exists and yields a regular splitting. For symmetric \(M\)-matrices and symmetric decomposition patterns he proves that the eigenvalues of the smoother are in a specified interval. The results generalize \textit{G. Wittum's} earlier results [SIAM J. Sci. Stat. Comput. 10, No. 4, 699-717 (1989; Zbl 0677.65096)].
