A complete constitutive theory is proposed. The study is restricted to quasi-static and isothermal processes in elastic materials. Inequalities that restrict the physically inadmissible processes are postulated, and the information about the material behavior is obtained from a free energy potential. Based on a particular form for the free energy, the possibility of occurring nonhomogeneous deformation on bars in tension, whenever the appropriate boundary conditions are adopted, is investigated. The results of some simulations are presented.
