Multidomain spectral collocation method for solving compressible flows is presented using upwind characteristic method for advection terms and a penalty method to treat viscous terms at the interface. It is shown to be equivalent to a variational method applied to the Poisson equation. There are some advantages which are illustrated by examples of subsonic and supersonic flows past a flat plate and transonic flow in a converging- diverging nozzle.
