An exponentially accurate boundary integral method for calculating the equilibria and dynamics of piecewise constant distributions of potential vorticity is presented. The technique is used both in an initial value code and in a Newton continuation method. The methods are compared numerically to known analytic results, and it is shown that for the same amount of computational work they are more accurate than other contour dynamics methods currently in use.
