The irrotational plane motion induced in an ideal fluid with free boundary by a straight line vortex of infinite length is studied using the complex method. By means of a conformal mapping, the original problem is reduced to a new problem in the unit disc, and using a fixed point argument it is shown that this problem admits one and only one solution for sufficiently small gravity acceleration.
