Discontinuous wavelets are constructed on certain invariant sets in \(\mathbb{R}^ n\) using the matrix refinement equation and the basic operation of translation and scale. In the special case of the unit interval this construction can be modified to obtain continuous wavelets. The method can be used to construct wavelets on self-similar-fractal sets in \(\mathbb{R}^ n\).
