The spectral portrait of a matrix, like the pseudospectrum studied by \textit{L. N. Trefethen} [Pitman Res. Notes Math. Ser. 260, 234-266 (1992; Zbl 0798.15005)], contains the eigenvalues of all matrices in a small neighbourhood of a given matrix. In this paper the authors present an algorithm for estimating the spectral portrait of a large sparse matrix \(A\). It computes \(\sigma_{\min} (A - \mu I)\) for each \(\mu\) on a certain grid.
