A second order differential equation used as a nonlinear damping model with stochastic external force is investigated. The authors develop the method of energy approximation, which is a Krylov-Bogolyubov type approximation, to obtain a modified model, namely an energy type nonlinear damping model. The van der Pol oscillator is considered for illustration, and a problem of modeling nonlinear damping from free response data is considered as an application.
