The author considers largely singular operators, which are a sharp contrast to invertible operators or Fredholm operators. Nevertheless, he discovers that the set has a surprising amount of nice structure. Without assuming that the underlying Hilbert space is separable, he is able to compute the distance from an arbitrary operator to the set. The distance formula involves the modulus of invertibility, which was introduced in an earlier paper.
