An attempt to construct adaptive difference methods for the numerical integration of initial value problems (IVP) for systems of ordinary differential equations is described. The basic idea is to select the current stepsize so that it corresponds to the local behavior of the exact solution of the IVP. This might turn especially useful in the case of stiff systems. A single numerical example for a linear IVP is discussed to illustrate the advantages of the authors' idea over the well-known method of Gear.
