A modified starting procedure is proposed which improves on the efficiency of PECE variable stepsize variable order difference formulas for the numerical integration of initial value problems for systems of ordinary differential equations. The new procedure is based on the examinations of the behavior of a bound on the error propagation. Results from solutions of test examples illustrate the theory.
