Some common shortfalls of methods of transient analysis by finite elements are discussed and an approach of \(hp\)-type is suggested. Here \(hp\) means a combination of self-adaptive grid refinement and the method of increasing the degree \(p\) of the polynomial shape functions. Convergence and error prediction are discussed and a case study of wave propagation in an aluminium block is presented.
