We consider the computation of ion-exchange when an ambient groundwater of one uniform composition is displaced by an injection solution of a constant but differing composition. Conditions are given under which an approximate solution to the plateau concentration in the \(n\)-dimensional heterovalent system can be calculated. Further, two algorithms for the three-component heterovalent system are derived. Finally, a discretisation method is introduced in which the concept of adaptive mesh refinement is applied.
