The author introduces and discusses in detail a class of Lie algebras of differential operators on the unit circle. This class generalizes naturally the Witt and Virasoro algebras and includes the higher-spin algebras \(W_{1 + \infty}\) and \(W_\infty\) which occur in the physics literature.
