The author gives a succinct account of Hölder's work based on the research of Julia Nicholson. Hölder studied under Weierstrass and Kronecker in Berlin, but the crucial influence on his career interests was due to Klein and von Dyck at Göttingen. Working in Tübingen from 1890, Hölder's early research was in Galois theory. His idea of the composition series of a group gave Riseto his version of the result now known as the Jordan-Hölder theorem. His investigations included the application of normal subgroups and quotient groups and hence to search for simple groups, the study of the structure of finite groups and group extensions.
