In a yet unpublished paper of the second author, O'Keefe and Penttila (Characterisations of Buekenhout-Metz unitals), the Buekenhout-Metz unitals in the desarguesian plane \(PG (2, q^ 2)\), \(q\) even or \(q = 3\), are characterized by the property that there exists a point \(p\) of the unital such that all secants through \(p\) meet the unital in a Baer subline. In the paper under review, the authors generalize this characterization to the Buekenhout-Metz unitals in all desarguesian planes.
