The author is concerned with the influence of the electrostrictive effect on the propagation of progressive waves in an isotropic three-dimensional material subject to initial mechanical and electrical fields. From the fundamental equations, governing the mass density, the initial and incremental electric fields, and the incremental fields of displacement, stress, body force, charge density, electric displacement, and electric potential, the author derives that the incremental progressive waves can propagate in a pre-stressed and pre-polarized electroelastic material. In the special case, where materials are isotropic, the conditions of wave propagation are discussed for longitudinal, transverse and oblique initial electric fields. Numerical computations are carried out to investigate the influence of initial mechanical and electric fields on wave velocities.
