The authors use tools of nonsmooth analysis to obtain two versions of the weak maximum principle for optimal control problems involving ODE's and constraints acting simultaneously on the state and on the controls. The different versions apply, respectively, to problems with equality and to problems with both equality and inequality constraints. The results depend on adequate rank conditions concerning the constraints. These conditions are compared to other rank conditions used in the literature.
