By means of adaptive updating rules, an algorithm is presented for fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) of faults in actuators and sensors in the case of a linear time-invariant system subject to an unknown input that represents either model uncertainty or unmeasurable disturbances. Two observers -- a fixed detection observer and an adaptive diagnostic observer -- are constructed separately to detect and diagnose the fault. As a result, a convergent adaptive diagnostic algorithm for estimating the parameters in the nonlinear actuators is developed. Two illustrative numerical examples are given.
