In a book of \textit{S. K. Berberian} [Baer *-rings (Springer 1972; Zbl 0242.16008)] the question whether a weakly Rickart \(*\)-ring can be embedded in a Rickart \(*\)-ring (so that annihilating right projections are preserved) is posed. In the paper under review some partial answers are given. In particular, the answer is affirmative in the case of nonzero characteristic.
