\textit{K. Gödel} [Rev. Modern Phys. 21, 447-450 (1949)] obtained an exact solution of Einstein's equations which is stationary and has rotating matter source, quite independently and, probably, unaware of the similar work by \textit{K. Lanczos} [Z. für Phys., 21, 73 (1924)]. However, Lanczos' paper contains some other results dealing with the application of his results to our universe based on astrophysical considerations which are not acceptable today. The same solution was rediscovered by \textit{W. J. van Stockum} [Proc. R. Soc. Edinb. 57, 135 (1937)] and \textit{J. P. Wright} [J. Math. Phys. 6, 103-105 (1965; Zbl 0125.45405)]. It was further extended by \textit{S. C. Maitra} [J. Math. Phys. 7, 1025-1030 (1966)] and \textit{R. M. Misra} and \textit{U. N. Pathak} [Proc. Nat. Inst. Sci. (India) (1970)]. The Lanczos solution did not get the historical priority it deserves until it was emphatically pointed out by Polish scientist Prof. \textit{A. Krasinski} (preprints 1974/75). This English translation of the original (German) text by K. Lanczos is important for setting the records straight.
