The author shows that a Hausdorff locally connected Baire space in the strong sense cannot be covered by an attracting sequence of proper closed sets. He then uses this abstract result to deduce F. Sunyer Balaguer's result on a local characterization of real polynomials [\textit{E. Corominas} and \textit{F. Sunyer Balaguer}, Revista Mat. Hisp. Am., IV. Ser. 14, 26-43 (1954; Zbl 0055.28801)].
