For a shear flow of a ductile material with strain softening after critical plastic strain and with strain rate sensitivity after the peak of stress, there exists a time during which the stable state changes to the softening state. The authors present a numerical simulation of the corresponding linear problem. It is shown that this transition occurs smoothly between decreasing and increasing strain-rate non-uniformities, and the latter involves a smooth non-uniform collapse of the shear stress.
