The author studies a concept of \(L^2\)-discrepancy attributed to Hlawka and Fleischer, which was already considered earlier by \textit{H. Rindler} [see e.g. Monatsh. Math. 82, 207-235 (1976; Zbl 0361.43002)]. Proposition 1 follows already from the stronger Theorem 1 in \textit{H. Rindler} [Arch. Math. 26, 209-213 (1975; Zbl 0299.43003)]. Among other estimates an inequality of Erdös-Turan type for the discrepancy of compact abelian groups and some applications are given.
