In his work on pointwise ergodic theorems for arithmetic subsequences of the integers Bourgain obtained a remarkable maximal inequality [cf. \textit{J. Bourgain}, Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 69, 5-45 (1989; Zbl 0705.28008)]. In the paper under review, the author gives a simple proof of Bourgain's estimate under the additional assumption that the base point of the multipliers be in a lattice.
