A Lévy-type decomposition theorem for negative definite functions on the semigroup \(\mathbb{N}^p_0\) (resp. on \(\mathbb{N}_0^p \times\mathbb{N}_0^p\) with the involution \((m,n)^* =(n,m))\), published 1985 by Buchwalter, is generalized to arbitrary abelian \(*\)-semigroups.
