The problem of reconstructing the trajectory of an object from measurement data is formalized as an optimal control problem. Using Pontryagin's principle, the optimal trajectories are determined. The discrete-measurement case which is important for practical applications is also analysed. As an example, a model problem for the motion of a helicopter is presented.
