Conformance testing of linear operators is discussed using average errors. An almost optimal test set is constructed and an almost matching of lower and upper bounds on the number of tests is derived. On the other hand the dependence of the number of tests on the various problem parameters is investigated and the results are compared with those in the worst case setting. The main ideas and results are illustrated by a number of examples.
