This paper makes use of linear logic in order to exhibit the relationship between Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) and semantic interpretations. LFG assumes two syntactic levels of representation: constituent structure (i.e. a phrase structure tree encoding precedence relation) and functional structure (i.e. an attribute-value matrix encoding the predicate argument structure). The authors use linear logic for representing the link between functional structures and their meanings. This can represent the constraints on the creation and use of semantic units in sentence interpretation. This is applied to quantification, adequacy and intensional verbs. Various examples are given. A comparison is made with recent refinements and variants of the well-known Lambek calculus.
