The author gives a counterexample to a conjecture by \textit{L. Rodman} and \textit{T. Shalom} [ibid. 168, 221-249 (1992; Zbl 0748.15011)] concerning the possible Jordan normal forms of nilpotent matrices where the entries in the upper triangular part are prescribed.
