Concerning the topologically contractible curves embedded in the affine plane defined over the complex numbers we shall present new conceptual proofs to the theorem of \textit{S. S. Abhyankar} and \textit{T. Moh} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 276, 148-166 (1975; Zbl 0332.14004)] and the theorem of \textit{M. G. Zajdenberg} and \textit{V. Ya Lin} [Sov. Math., Dokl. 28, 200-204 (1983); translation from Dokl. Adad. Nauk SSSR 271, 1048-1052 (1983; Zbl 0564.14014)] which are based on the structure theorems of non-complete algebraic surfaces.
