The study introduces a mathematical formulation for describing the effect of a porous layer on the hydrodynamic lubrication performance of an externally pressurized circular recessed bearing. The effect of slip velocity at the fluid-porous interface and the effect of variable viscosity and pressure are both considered. Finally, the authors present a numerical solution of the proposed mathematical model. The conclusions of this study are: the dimensionless viscosity parameter has significant effects on the pressure profiles and the load-carrying capacity of the externally pressurized porous bearings; when the dimensionless viscosity parameter is greater than 0.1, the permeability parameter has significant effects on the pressure profiles and the load-carrying capacity of the bearing; as in non-porous externally pressurized bearings, as the recess area increases, both the pressure and the load-carrying capacity increase.
