The authors develop a unified treatment of symmetric pairs of Stirling numbers as a class determined by four complex parameters. Particular applications include transformations of generalized factorials, Schlömlich-type formulas, congruence properties, and generalizations of Stirling numbers proposed earlier by L. Carlitz, F. T. Howard, H. W. Gould, M. Koutras et al.
