This paper appears to expand results of the author's paper [Osaka J. Math. 34, No. 2, 497-523 (1997; Zbl 0885.57010)] (on classification of Heegaard splittings). It contains numerous references to preprints which were unavailable to the reviewer. It contains many examples of the author's method applied to cusped hyperbolic manifolds.
