The intensity \(i(x,\mu)\) is expanded into a sum \[ i(x,\mu) =\sum^N_{m= 0} {2m+1 \over 4\pi}P_m(\mu) \psi_m(x), \tag{1} \] where \(P_m(\mu)\) are Legendre polynomials. Substituting (1) into the corresponding integral equation the author deduces a recurrence formula. Here \(N\) is the order of approximation.
