Two theorems on the `constant' term in certain Laurent polynomials have been proved by Cooper and by Zeilberger using methods of a combinatorial nature; these expressions involve the basic hypergeometric function \({}_2\varphi_1\). In this paper, the author establishes, by analytic methods, a more general theorem of this type, introducing a new kind of basic hypergeometric function involving Macdonald polynomials. The results are too long to reproduce here.
