[For Vol. I resp. Vol. II of this series see the reviews Zbl 0758.62001 resp. Zbl 0758.62002.] This book is the third volume of a collection of seminal papers in the statistical sciences written during the past 110 years. This volume concentrates on articles from the 1980's while including some earlier articles not included in the previous two volumes. The papers included in this volume have each had an outstanding influence on the development of statistical theory and practice over the last century. Each paper is preceded by an introduction providing background information and assessing its influence. A collection of 22 papers has been selected for presentation in this volume. This collection includes papers such as (1) ``The analysis of groups of experiments'' by \textit{F. Yates} and \textit{W. G. Cochran} (1938), (2) ``Large sample tests of statistical hypotheses concerning several parameters with application to problems of estimation'' by \textit{C. R. Rao} (1948), (3) ``Saddle point approximations in statistics'' by \textit{H. E. Daniels} (1954), (4) ``Bayes estimates for the linear model'' by \textit{D. V. Lindley} and \textit{A. F. M. Smith} (1972), and (5) ``Theoretical comparison of bootstrap confidence intervals'' by \textit{P. Hall} (1988).
