Based on Tollmien's counterexample of a velocity distribution, for which Rayleigh's inflection-point theorem is necessary but not sufficient, the authors first summarize the associated theorems. Subsequently they derive a new sufficiency condition which shows that a wide class of parallel, homogeneous inviscid shear flows could be made stable, even though the flow satisfies Fjortoft's instability criterion, by bringing the boundaries sufficiently close.
