The authors indicate a way for designing materials with negative Poisson ratio. The method is based on configurations of arrays of inclusions with polygonal shaped re-entrant corners. By using numerical homogenization, the authors show that the shape of star-shaped micro-inclusions is mainly responsible for the phenomenon.
