This paper is concerned with the existence and computation of periodic orbits of autonomous systems of ordinary differential equations, by means of shadowing techniques. First of all the authors present a theorem which extends their previous results [Contemp. Math. 172, 115-130 (1994; Zbl 0808.34059)] on the existence of stable periodic orbits or unstable ones with short periods to the case of unstable periodic orbits with long periods. The practical application of this theory requires the computation of a pseudoperiodic orbit with small local errors and to this end the authors propose a Newton-type method to decrease the errors in a previously computed pseudoperiodic orbit up to the machine precision. Moreover a way to estimate the Lyapunov exponents of periodic orbits whose existence is proved in this theory is presented. Finally the proposed technique is applied to compute explicitly long periodic orbits of the Lorenz equations with prescribed geometries.
