Utilizing results by A. J. Fryant, R. P. Gilbert, G. P. Kapoor, A. Nautiyal, and others, the author studies generalized axisymmetric potentials (GASPs) in the plane. The main tool is their power series expansion about the origin in terms of Gegenbauer polynomials [cf. \textit{A. J. Fryant}, J. Approx. Theory 19, 361-370 (1977; Zbl 0348.31002)]. The coefficients of these expansions as well as the approximation error by GASP polynomials are used to obtain characterizations of lower order and lower type of GASPs.
