The articles of this volume will be reviewed individually. The primary aim of this joint EC-NSF research project was to study non-deterministic extensions of logic-based database languages from the points of view of semantics, implementation efficiency, language expressiveness, query complexity and application impact. The ultimate goal of the activity is the design of a logic-based language which incorporates the appropriate non-deterministic operators. The collaborate efford promoted research in these areas both internally (within the consortium) as well as externally through the organization of workshops and meetings. Two workshops have been held: one on ``non-deterministic in deductive databases'' held in Prague in January 1995, the other on ``logic in databases'' held in San Miniato'' Italy in July 1996. This issue represents the final polished outcome of the first workshop held in Prague. The Prague workshop published no proceedings, not even an informal one. All participants were invited to submit full length, journal quality papers, for publication in this special, edited issue. Of the submitted papers, the ones were selected that represented the highest quality, and offered the greatest diversity of research on non-deterministic in databases.
