The second edition of Penrose's book ``An investigation of the principles of Athenian architecture'' was published by the Dilettanti Society in 1888. Penrose's aim with this book was to fill up the lacunae left behind, particularly by Stuart and Revett, with the aid of his friend T. I. Willson. In his paper, the author gives brief chapter reviews from Penrose's book, and he hopes, he says, that some of his readers will further explore this subject more deeply and thoroughly than he has here. At the end of the paper, the author gives a list of definitions of some common architectural terms.
