The derivatives (also called gradients) of the principal invariants of an arbitrary second order tensor in an \(n\)-dimensional space are gien in [\textit{D. E. Carlson} and \textit{A. Hoger}, J. Elasticity 16, 221-224 (1986; Zbl 0585.73006)]. Guo derived them in two different ways in [\textit{Z. Guo}, J. Elasticity 22, 185-191 (1989; Zbl 0697.73015)], and the purpose of the present paper is to obtain them in a direct and more consistent way.
