The paper deals with a general problem of a three-dimensional assembly of more than two bodies using a very high speed and low programming effort method. For some problems the new approach is more useful than the standard finite element method (FEM) because it requires smaller computation and programming effort. The method uses simplified models of the bodies of the assembly. Although it applies to a broad category of problems involving joints localized in small areas, the method is not applicable to cases where the joints are spatially extended. Also, the simplified modelling introduces errors, but their level is often acceptable in practical cases. The decision whether this method or FEM should be used depends on the balance between computation and programming effort on one hand, and loss of accuracy due to the use of approximate models on the other. An industrial application of the method demonstrates the flexibility and generality of the approach.
